I just got my insurance renewal and started thinking about the insurance I have on the trailer. I am paying $131 per year - up from $121 last year. That seems low so I thought it would be interesting to see what the range out there was. I realize that this figure is only for comprehensive and collision and my truck at $300 is carry the rest.

Have you thought of full timers vs non full timers insurance?  I would imagine there is a considerable difference  in $$.

For my company it's based on annual miles driven not the time spent living in it. Maybe other companies are different though.

I just added another level from $400 to $499 since the first two entries after mine were over the max.

Oh yeah, alot more when full-timing.  Plus you might have replacement cost or total loss replacement cost.  Plus since it's your home then you might have "valuable property" on all your stuff.    Depending on what your stuff costs to replace will depend on the cost of your insurance.    And then something else to remember.  Depends on your trailer.  What you have.  HH2 to a Champagne will be different in cost.

Living in hurricane country I have a total replacement cost policy from Progressive.  If the trailer get wiped out by a hurricane or any other covered peril I would get a check for what I paid for the trailer. Cost  a lot more but worth it.

I don't have replacement cost, but I did get (an agreed value) of what I payed for the unit which I thought was fair since the units drop like a rock ever year according to NADA.....
Just hope I never have to use it....

The insurance premium depends a lot on what address you put down for it's location.  An address in the boondocks of SD would be a LOT cheaper than some city where the traffic is busy all the time.

Just paid the bill for 6 months. We are not full-timers. We are with Allstate. $406.58 for 6 months. This is ACV for collision & Comprehensive. $15,000 contents. Good Sam sent me a offer this week for a policy where you can save $ while the rig is in storage. I really need to find some insurance that is cheaper and offers a better replacement value. My agent said Allstate does not offer agreed value. The location is Houston, TX. We do know that all our insurance will go down if we move away from Harris Co and the Texas coast.

Nov. 2007 our truck and trailer premium came due. It was already too high. They were going to raise it $300.00 (we have NEVER had a claim).  That is when we moved from Livingston, Tx. Escapees.  To Sioux Falls, SD.  With our new address the premium went down $400.00 Rather than up $300.00.   The agent told us that Texas has some of the higher premiums (to close to Mexico) and SD. has some of the very lowest.  The move to SD. also saved us a huge amount on our Medical supplement premiums.

To make a better poll, it should include the cost to insure the truck.  When I bought my truck I called my insurance company that I had my F350 insured with.  The premium would triple, plus they did not have a handle on what is a MDT and what is rv'ing.  I then called several companies recommended by Escapee's.  Cost again was way up.  I then call Explorer RV with whom I have my trailer insurance.  Since I have an address in Montana, they gave me insurance based on Montana instead of California.  The combined cost was the same as what I was paying when I had my F350.  My annual premium is $1770.  It includes coverage in Mexico for both truck and trailer (I still need Mexican liability insurance to be legal with Mexico).  It is for total loss replacement value on the trailer.  It includes $500 diminishing deductible for the truck and trailer.  It goes down $125 per year of no claims.  After 4 years the deductible is zero.  It is $500,000 on the liability.  It includes medical, uninsured motorist, towing and vacation liability, and emergency vacation expense.

My insurance is with Triumphe Casualty Company, through Explorer RV.  I was pretty happy that my Freightliner did not raise my budget for insurance.

We got the GMAC insurance through Camping World.  Probably the same as Good Sam....  They have replacement coverage for 5 years on a new trailer as part of the coverage.  A nice thing (for me) about the coverage is that you can have comprehensive without the collision.  My rig is parked in the campground year-round, I did not need collision coverage.  They just deleted that coverage and reduced the premium 50%...  The ability to temporarily stop coverage is in the CW plan also.

We've used State Farm for our insurance for more years than I can remember, with excellent service.  They cover everything we have, including Home, Vehicles & HH, including road service.  Insurance buying can be quite an emotional thing.  It is always a struggle to weigh the options of, do I or don't I cover a certain risk and to what level.  What will it cost me out of pocket if I don't or if I do cover the risk.  It's not an easy, cut and dry process and as individual a decision as anything, anyone ever has to do.  It's a decision we all have to make, based on the information we can muster and our own personal experiences and exposures.

Good poll,

We have fulltimers on the rig, it cost a little over $850. The rig is a 2005 32.5FKSBG.  Our address in Livingston, Texas. Had a mishap this last May and our insurance company was great.  We are covered by National Intersate .When checking on coverage be sure they cover what you need. Saving a few dollars may end up costing a lot when you need it...

I got an on-line quote from Geico yesterday. They quoted an annual premium of $440 for my rig with exactly the same coverage I have with Wawanesa that costs $131 per year. I just called them to confirm that we were comparing apples to apples. I also asked them what the rate for full time would be and it would only increase to $482. She did confirm that the big variables that influences the rate is location and age of the rig. How much it can change due to location she didn't know.

When I first saw this poll I voted and sent a pm to one member I felt could get a better deal simply because I feared revealing my experience and opinion on a public forum might ruffle the feathers of someone with insurance company connections. After seeing additional posts I think putting a toe in the water might be better than watching from the sidelines. Apparently the agent some times determines cost and value more than the company does. When I purchased a house for mother my Allstate agent was unable to write a policy due to some in house territorial agreement among agents. I insured the house with State Farm and watched  as cost increased to the point her house eventhough valued at 25% of mine was costing more to insure. When I started to question the cost I found the State Farm agent had added every coverage she could including expensive foundation coverage one might find valuable if they were at risk of earth quake. Although I am the home owner and the bill is sent to and paid by me,my 95 year young mom was considered owner of the policy so therefore my access and ability to discuss the policy was limited tongue same as if I was inquiring about a strangers policy. Needless to say after I finished kicking the dog and  :angry:cussing,I started to look at my options and realized the house had foundation problems which are very common with our soil.  I contacted acquaintances in the small town to let them know I intended having the foundation repaired courtesy of State Farm and suggest they do the same if they had the coverage. Some of those who had policies with the coverage had recently been contacted by the agent announcing she had found a way to save them money angel on their homeowners policy. The few policy holders with issues I talked to before the agent had canceled the dubious coverage have joined with me to bring some justice cheesy which is still being worked on. So as a cute little green gecko once said "fifteen minutes could save fifte~~ " uh,a bundle, maybe without even changing carrier.

Newt, State Farm, like most companies will only pay actual cash value on a total loss. The companies that offer "replacement value" coverage offer it as a rider, and only on units from new to 5 years of age. When we bought the Collingwoods' trailer in 2008, I checked several companies. Progressive wanted $946/yr. State Farm $520. Coverage was nearly identical; Progressive offered the replacement cost rider. Gilbert RV Insurance wanted nearly $1000/yr. but their coverage was better suited to fulltime use. In the end, I went with State Farm as a compromise, as their premium quote was lower than anyone when "off premises" storage was factored in. Progressive stopped talking to me when I told them the trailer would not be stored at our home.

We use GMAC thru Good Sam and we pay a yearly premium for the 5th wheel, truck and Dianes car. It includes fulltimers, 5 yr full replacement (5th wheel), 10K on contents and some other minor stuff. We pay $2000. a year for everything, this coming fall when we renew it should drop another 100-200 for the premium year.

Tom,  thanks for mentioning the trailer storage issue.  That was another reason we've stayed with State Farm.  Over the years, they've never had a problem with our storing RV's away from home.
