I am searching out some road maps, atlases and RV directories. I was wondering what are some of your favorites and "MUST TAKE ALONG" books?

Stop at a truck stop and buy a laminated atlas. It will be heavier than just a paper one but will last a lot longer, have the truck routs highlighted, and is spiral bound so you can easily flip to different states. DW uses Good Sam website for trip planning, lots of info you can print along with road directions.....diesel prices, rest stops, etc.
www.rvparkreviews.com
for CG info and evaluations. DW also uses mapquest. Greg

Great ideas, Greg, particularly about the atlas that highlights truck routes!

We usually look for an atlas from costco or walmart that has all of the states, canada and mexico. Rand Mcnally types. Bigger print is sometimes better. We also use MS Streets and Trips (connected to our dell laptop and gps sensor) and our truck navigation system (which is poor). We also highlight our routes after we have traveled and use a different color for campsites. We also write in the margins when we want to remember something interesting that we've seen or done when traveling.

we have one of these atlas in large print and love it! we use it going down the road along w/the GPS and have a fairly easy time getting to where we want to go... The Next Exit for freeways, makes it so easy to fly by the seat of your pants... Woodalls for the rv park information as they are fairly accurate about big rig capabilities... :) these necessities make it fairly stress free for traveling/fueling and staying.

Great suggestions. Thanks to each and every one of you for the ideas. I have an order in to Amazon in addition to what I had. DH is afraid we'll need another tag along for all the books, laptops, iPhone, etc.

The first crew cab we ever bought was after the kids were no longer going camping with us. The dog has to be in the front. That leaves the back seat for hauling books.

Perfect......Zoey rides on the front console with us, too. I am sure all the books will also go in the crewcab or at my feet. I don't want them too far away. You never know when I will want/need one.

One book I have found helpful on our current Western trip, along with the other books previously mentioned, is the Mountain Directory West (they also have an East edition). It has "Locations and Descriptions of over 400 Mountain Passes and Steep Grades in Eleven Western States". Also rely on the RV Park Review website and a good atlas.

I was just kidding around but we do haul that with us everywhere. JimB hauls a smallish Featherlite trailer behind his rig for his toys and seems happy with it.
Looks like airbags might make a nice addition to the F350 also.

We also have the Western Mountain Directory and I have found that some of the passes and mountains they describe are no problem. At several other times we have come across much worse passes and mountains that are not even in the book. Don't take the book as gospel. Greg

We have found the Michelin North America Atlas has much more detail than any of the Rand McNally ones.

Judye and I like the large print trucker's atlas that you can get at truck stops. Like the fact that truck routes are highlighted.

We also recommend the laminated Truckers Atlas Big Greg mentioned. It also gives VERY accurate clearances for every bridge in America. We used it alot while back in the eastern part of the U.S. where the over/underpasses tend to be shorter.
