I have looked but can't seem to find any posts on the quote box feature.  I have tried to figure it out on my own but so far it has me stumped.  Huh  So, to the "Three Amigos'", please help!  Thanks!

Good question. Since I know a little about HTML - very little - I'm seeing that if you select the quote button it just gives you the command characters and then I've just been cutting and pasting the quotes I want between them. That works but it seems like there oughta be a better way.

OK everyone... here is the step-by-step version.   ;D

When you read a posting by someone, and you want to reply back to that posting, but you also want to "quote" some of the stuff they said, then you can reply buy pushing the button.

You will now see something like this (if you were going to "quote" THIS message):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
{quote author=Kicked-Ash link=topic=283.msg1695#msg1695 date=1165432600]
OK everyone... here is the step-by-step version.   ;D

When you read a posting by someone, and you want to reply back to that posting, but you also want to "quote" some of the stuff they said, then you can reply buy pushing the button.

You will now see something like this (if you were going to "quote" THIS message):

{/quote]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can see that using the "quote" buttons, creates a set of two brackets "[]" and "[/]" with the word "quote" inserted in between.  The "/" in the second quote box, dictates that this is where the quote stops.  I can't actually type the real "quote" commands, or you would only be able to see this
Quote

So I have had to replace the first bracket in both "quote" boxes, with the "{" bracket so you can read this teaching message.  If the "{" was replaced with the correct bracket "[", you would then see this after you post your response:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is where you would type your response, or question... and down below will be the quote from the original message.

OK everyone... here is the step-by-step version.   ;D

You may also just "Type" in the "{quote]" and "{/quote]" boxes anywhere you wish within a response.

As an example:

Say you just want to "quote" just one part of a posting... you could do this:

Gary is such a {quote]"Great" guy{/quote], and he's worked hard on making this Forum a lot easier to use!   ;D

Now let's see what it would really look like if I'd used the correct "[" part of the bracket:

Gary is such a
Quote
"Great" guy
, and he's worked hard on making this Forum a lot easier to use!   ;D

You can also get rid of any excess text you don't want or need BEFORE the first "[]" quote box, and AFTER the last "[/]" quote box... like this:

Quote
Gary is such a "GREAT" guy

Hope this makes the "Quote" part of the Forum easier to use.

Keep those questions coming!   ;D

you can reply buy pushing the button (just to the left of the "Modify" button).

Gary,
On my screen, the reply button is to the left of the "Modify" button.  The button is in the upper right corner of the person's post.

Bryan,

Thanks for clarifying that for the members... as my "Administrator" level, gives me Ton's of different buttons in different orders that you guys don't see.  I went back in, and deleted that part of the message.  Thanks!   Wink

Gary:   When I hit the quote Icon, it appears where it chooses, and I see no way to "move it".   So how do I control what is "restated" in my reply.   If I type in the words quote as instructed, do I not then need to hit the quote icon?    In other words it seems I would end up with a small quote within a larger quote.   I'm still struggling with this one.   And do I put my reply above the quoted area or below it?    MIKE

Mike, I'm not Gary, but since you were up very early, and I am up modestly early, and Gary won't be up for awhile yet, I'll take a stab at answering your questions. I hope I don't confuse anyone, as Gary is doing a great job of teaching all of us how to use this forum.

Regarding "moving" the quotes, there are a couple of things you can do.

* You can delete text which is within the quote. That just gets rid of stuff.

* You can copy and paste (the same as typing in your own) the {quote] and {/quote] tags to different places to split up your quote. That's what I did in this post. (Remember, the "{" shown in this sentence really must be typed as a "[".) When I do this, I find it much easier if I first put the cursor where I want the original information to "split" and put in 2 or 3 "Enter" to put some blank lines on the page. This gives a bit of room in which to work.

If I type in the words quote as instructed, do I not then need to hit the quote icon?

If you type in the quote tags, do not hit the quote icon.  You've already done the work which it would do!

Quote
And do I put my reply above the quoted area or below it?

Personally, I prefer the quoted stuff first, then the comment regarding that quote below. Others prefer it the other way.  I think which is "best" depends largely on whether one is responding to a specific question or commet ---then quote first seems to make sense.

If one is just including material from a previous post for general reference, then quote last works best. (This was done all the time on the Yahoo forum, probably because it came "for free" when one hit the Reply button. I hated it and it used a LOT of download time! Because of the format of the new forum, this doesn't happen much here, thank goodness.)

Cheers,
Keith

I always hit the "Quote" button, and then go in and edit what areas I want selected (like what I'm doing here).

That is correct.  If you want to, you can just "Reply" back to a post, and edit where you want the "quote" sections to begin and end.  You may also delete excess text in the message that isn't pertinant to what you want to respond to.  Just remember that your "Quote" sections, must begin with "{quote]", and end with "{/quote]" (and don't forget to replace the first bracket "{" with "[").

In other words it seems I would end up with a small quote within a larger quote.   I'm still struggling with this one.   And do I put my reply above the quoted area or below it?

For the responses you're using the "Quotes" for, I'd just go in a manually type in the "quoted" codes in the areas you want quoted in the message, and forget about clicking on the "Quote" button.  Also... remember to place YOUR response text, outside of the ending {/quote] box.  Any text you enter in between the {quote] and the {/quote] codes, will also be added into the "Quote" highlighted text.

As far as where to type your responses (above or below the quotes),  if the quoted area is small (say one line or two), then I post under the quoted areas (like what I did at the start of this message).  If on the other hand, you quote a "paragraph", I'd post your response text above it.

Hope this helps...

1.   I hit the quote button...
Quote

2.   Copy the text I want ....I have tried to figure it out on my own but so far it has me stumped. (This is from my original post)

3.   Then paste it between the two
Quote
.....

I have tried to figure it out on my own but so far it has me stumped.

Now I am going to submit this... let's see if it works.  It is very easy to do this way if it does. ;D

Well, it worked very nicely, however, the brackets don't show on your end, just mine when I am writing.  Anyways, copy and paste the text between the brackets, after you hit the yellow quote button. It is easy and work great.  Hope this was helpful.

Robin,

That's why when I was showing you how to type out the "Quote" codes, I used the "{" bracket on the left-hand side of both quote boxes.  If you try to type the REAL "Quote Codes", you'll only see the highlighted quote line after you submit your post.

So you could have typed:

Post and copy the text in between the two quote boxes:

{quote]Place your copied text right here.{/quote]  <--- Now you can see these typed instructions.

Good job all the same!   ;D

I enjoy your dry sense of humor, Keith.  Reminds me of my Son.  Have to be alert or it goes right over your shoulder.   Yep, Gary was snoozing late.  Wish I could, but NuWa always on my mind.   Thanks for the lesson; I am trying it here, and will experiment further.   MIKE

Mike,

Yep... you East Country members get-up way to early for me!   ;D  Why out here on the West coast, we're always last to findout what's happening in the world!   Wink

It looks as though you finally have a handle on "quoting" Mike.  I think the "Cut-and-Paste" the text you want, then enter it in between the [quote boxes], is the answer for you.
