With the snowstorm there is 4" of snow in the pickup's box with 6 more on its way, maybe. When a tonneau covers the pickup's box does the truck's mileage improve? Conventional wisdom says yes. Tonneau cover marketing says mileage improves by 10%.

SteamboatInn,

When I kept a close track on my mileage, I noticed about a mile per gallon with the cover on...   smiley

I record every tank full.  I noticed no difference with a tonneau cover or synthetic lubricants.

Pace Edwards and a few other manufacturers are claiming 12% to 15% improvement with their products based on a study performed by the University of Michigan several years ago.  I have seen the results of the study in the past, but it appears that the information is no longer available on the UM website.

I like the idea of the hitch being covered and out of view.  Also easy to load grocery bags and keep them dry and still in the truck bed on a fast return home  grin.  Mine is an Access rollup and I would buy it again.

I had a "Roll-N-Lock" on my 2001 and put a ReTrax cover on my 2005.  I like the ReTrax a lot more then Roll-N-Lock but I really don't think it contributes a lot to mileage.  Just makes it more convenient to protect items in the bed and cover the hitch while not in use.  Here is the Retrax site:

We had a roll and lock on our previous Dodge and thought it was great.  The best thing about them is that they are lockable.
We had a short bed so the cost wasn't too high.  We now have a long bed so we went with a tri-fold and also had a lock installed in our tailgate.  Its not as easy to manage as the roll and lock but it works.

I have a standard bed 07 GMC and have the Trifecta by Extang tri-fold. It is my second cover by them and am very pleased with the cover.

I have a quad-fold cover by Advance Cover on my long bed truck. I've had the Pace-Edwards roll cover, but didn't like the cannister in the front of the bed. I wanted a tool box there this time. Has a lock at each end (front & back). When hitched up they fold to the front and has straps to keep them from flying up when motoring down the hwy.

I have the same cover and bought it for the same reasons as Harold.  Mine is 5 yrs old and the plastic rails that it sits on have cracked and split and need to be replaced (Colorado sun) ... also the rubber covering the hinges have also cracked & split due to the sun.  I bought some aluminum rail to replace the plastic but haven't done it yet.

I noticed no difference with a tonneau cover or synthetic lubricants.
I haven't noticed any difference in fuel mileage with the cover, either.

no difference in gas milage. I like having the hitch covered and with a tailgate lock I leave some other stuff under the cover.
