Gary - seems like I heard about an app while listening to the Boortz show on the radio this morning - something called "Dragon" - probably not spelling it correctly.

You speak a message, the app converts it to text, you review and send.  Sounds like it would be much easier than texting.  I'm text-challenged also - I have no idea how the kids do it so quickly.  It takes me a half hour to put together a 10 word text!

Mike
Be careful with that Dragon app.  Next thing you know, you'll be using that iphone to talk directly to somebody.   shocked

Dragon Naturally Speaking is software that types what you speak.  I've worked with various versions of this software over nearly 10 years.  If you speak very clearly in a quiet environment, it's amazing.  Otherwise, you might be frustrated.  I've worked in a field where dictation is part of the work process; Dragon is not as good as an excellent transcriptionist, but it's pretty amazing. (I guess that  my typing isn't as poor as I perceive because although I keep buying the newest version of Dragon, I find that when pushed, I just type the document myself.)

A few new apps to add here that I like;
ShopSavvy- old one but the last couple updates seem to have improved this app.
Truck Stops- this nice little app makes it easy to locate Rest Areas, Diesel fuel locations and prices, Truck Washes, and few other items for traveling such as notes and attractions.
USPS - find zip codes, post offices and hours. Works well.
DirecTV- forgot to record something? with this app you can check the guide and set you DVR to record from you iPhone
The default gps map is very nice for my needs I've been using that one quite a bit lately.
RV Checklist- a well thought out app and looks nice, I installed it but not really something I need. I know some folks like to keep a check list and here is one for your iPhone.

I found a new app for my DROID, actually it wasn't lost so I can't actually claim to have found it. I am sitting here logged onto the forum while my laptop to connected to the internet using my DROID. That's right, my laptop is tethered to my DROID and it is providing internet connectivity. Verizon will tell you that it won't do that however pda.net has a very neat DROID application that does. DROID does, sounds like a Verizon TV commercial.  laugh  One time charge of around $28 to pda.net and since the DROID has a unlimited data plan you can't go wrong. Drawbacks, can't be on the phone at the same time, oh well that's what voice mail is for.

I agree about PdaNet. I've used it for several years, first with Palm, and now with Windows Mobile. DW has a Droid, but we can use mine for both computers. It gets around Verizon's tethering charge, but won't work with a router, so far. An incoming calll will ring the phone. It's my choice whether to answer it.

George, could you do a speakeasy test and let us know what speeds you are getting with this setup?  Thanks

George, could you do a speakeasy test and let us know what speeds you are getting with this setup?  Thanks

Your wish is my command  lipsrsealed

The results for today, at my home are as follows:

Download    Upload      Test site
1.74             0.46         SFO (San Francisco)
1.10             0.38         SFO
0.84             0.42         SFO
1.49             0.55         LA (Los Angeles)
1.53             0.43         SFO
As you can see it does vary however I have seen the same types of changes on my home provider.
Not as fast as having your own T-1 connection but it does work and it is much cheaper.

The speeds that George posted for his tethered cell phone are pretty much the same as I experienced when I tested my air card at speakeasy.

George,

I went to www.pda.net but didn't see where to go from there.  I have a Blackberry and would like to see if there is a similar application.  Can you give me a pointer on where to look at pda.net?

Thanks!

My experience is with PdaNet for Palm and Windows Mobile. It looks and behaves the same, so I suspect it's just the software that's customized to the OS of the phone.

I see PdaNet's offering for the Droid to tether to the Mac is for OS 10.5 or higher.  I am happily running OS 10.4.11, and haven't found a reason to upgrade.  Anyone here tried the tether with 10.4?

TIA,
